Thank you for your message. Sorry for the confusion, I did consult with Dr. Cotter in order to offer you a more in depth understanding. She advised the following:

"For the first row, to divide an equilateral triangle into eighths, you would divide it into 4 pieces, then divide each one into 2 pieces. For the second row, to divide the equilateral triangle into 12ths, first divide it into 4ths, then 3rds. And so forth."
