Katie Kenny & Majella Haverty(Castlebar) winners of the Doubles at the 4th Women's Open
4th Women's Open There was a big entry of thirty women competing in the 4th Irish Women's Open held in Kilkenny on 24th November. Clubs from Connaught, Munster and Leinster all represented. Throughout the day, players of new and old took to the court to battle it out. Many of the matches went down to the wire with the majority being pushed to a tie break game, a great testament to the players and evenness of the draws. Well done to all the players that took part,it was you that helped to make this a great event! And with that in true form both our Novice/D Singles and Novice/D doubles went to tiebreakers! It was an all Galmoy affair in the Novice/D Singles as Avril Phelan battled clubmate Kelly Ann Ryan in the final. With Phelan coming out on top in the late evening final. In the Novice/D Doubles, it was a similar exchange when Kelly Ann Ryan (Galmoy) teamed up with Thea Coleman (Mitchelstown) to overtake their Irish junior counterparts Aoife Beckett(Araglen) and Sarah Ainsworth (Castlebar). In the Womens Open Singles, Irish no.1 Aisling Hickey (Rossmore) rose to the top once more as she defeated #2 Majella Haverty (Castlebar) 2-0 at the close of a long day in Kilkenny. Irish doubles pair, Katie Kenny(Castlebar) and Majella Haverty (Castlebar) defeated Rossmore clubmates Kate Ryan and Aisling Hickey. Junior Girls Winner went to Castlebar's Sarah Ainsworth. A massive thank you to our Womens Officer Katie Kenny who ran the tournament and kept the day going!
