Book A lesson 51 counting by two's and adding One

My trouble comes with the adding ones portion of the lesson. She cannot wrap her head around this without using the abacus.

Is my understanding correct that she should not be using the abacus to complete the worksheets? Is she to be able to process in her mind adding one number?

She can do this on the abacus. She can write her numbers to 100. She just does not connect with out the abacus how to add +1 to any number.

Re: Book A lesson 51 counting by two's and adding One

Allow her to use the Alabacus until she doesn't need it anymore. It takes some children longer to grasp the concept without the use of the abacus and that is OK.

It's just like us using a recipe card. After many times of making the item we will not need to use the recipe card. But until then is it wrong to use the recipe card to make sure we got the ingredients correct?

No difference than needing the Alabacus to help her. One day I can promise she will no longer need it...but let HER be the one to tell you when that time comes.
