My son is having trouble combining tally sticks (lesson 13). We have been working on this for several days and he just dosen't get it. When he tries to add the sticks together he just lines them up and counts them individually. I can't seem to get him to group them. How do I encourage him to use non-counting strategies? He has no problem with showing 1-10 using the abacus and showing 1-10 with his fingers and even showing 1-10 with tally sticks. He just seems to miss something when it comes to combining. Any advice would be appreciated.
