Rebecca,

Thank you for your message. When doing this lesson you would not actually need to have a container with 12 units, just make sure you have a clear container. You can tape a piece of paper to the side of the container with measurements up to twenty. Make sure to emphasize the marks for 5s and 10s.

It does not matter if you do the measurement in ounces or millimeters. The easiest may be to use the centimeter side of a ruler, this will give your child a nice visual.
