Thank you for your message. You brought up a very interesting question and I consulted with Dr. Cotter to see what her opinion was on this subject.

We wouldn't call it wrong at this stage, but we would encourage her to do it the traditional way. You might explain that we think of the line segment as traveling in the direction that the numbers increase; that is, from left to right and bottom to top. Later on, those directions are assumed for finding the slope of a line or the equation of a line.
