skip counting by 5s on the abacus

We are doing the transition lessons and we did lesson 17 today, skip counting by 5's to 5-ten. We can skip count by 5's easily on the first side of the abacus, but then I got confused about trying it on the marked side. Does the child "trade" after 10 or 20 beads or what? I got the feeling I'd missed something when we got to that lesson today.

Thank you!

Re: skip counting by 5s on the abacus

Hi Marianne,

Thanks for posting your question. Yes, trade after 10 beads as in 10 ones equals one 10, 10 tens equals one 100 etc.

Does this help? This may be better explained if you call our toll free customer service number where you can talk it through with a customer service person. We are there to help you Mon - Fri. 8:30am - 4:30pm CST If we are not available at the moment please leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Thank you for giving your family a RightStart in math.

Sincerely, Rosine
