Help needed please

Hello

I am totally new to this forum and am in need of some help.
We have today received a letter from the hospital confirming that our 11 yr old son has ADHD, features of Asperger's syndrome & mild oppositional defiant behaviour.

The Dr has suggested tablets. My wife at the moment is ver unsure as she believes they will turn him into a zombie - also there is no way he can swallow even 1 pill let alone a few a day.

Any advice. Is medication effective and is there any liquid available for ADHD in the UK?

Many thanks

Tony

Re: Help needed please

Sorry there is no liquid form of meds available but there is Equasym capsules. These can be opened and the granules put into a milky cold drink or cereal. It can't be chewed though, and don't worry, meds don't turn our children into zombies. It just slows them down enough to think things through. If your son is the same as mine, he will still get into to trouble, but not as much as he would if he wasn't taking the meds.

Re: Re: Help needed please

I just read your reply and my daughter takes a liquid form of ritalin called Methylin. It has a grape taste and she takes it 2xdaily. She is in 1st grade and this form has worked for her, especially WITHOUT the dreaded side effects. However, she is not as hungry when she is on it, but she makes up for it when it wears off during the day!!!!

Re: Re: Re: Help needed please

My lad's 15, and was suggested he went on ritalin @ 11 when 1st diagnosed, have to say i was very dubious.... but after a few weeks monotoring - his grades at school shot through the roof and he was so releived to be able to concentrate, ive happily let him continue during term time

Hes now on concerta ( only because he could never remember the dinner hour ritalin tab ) mind you - THOSE are like horse tablets LOL ritalin are tiny weeny things - ur son should be fine

At his age i'm sure he will realise the difference the medication makes - good luck

hi not sure if you still need help with the pill problem but i know that any of the children invoved in my life ,friend and family that could not take pills all we did was put the pill on the tongue and give them a starw and tell them to just drink fast like it was not even there the straw has never failed us yet good luck...as for the zombie part my son is adhd and aspergers and his school issues became much less after meds i will day that i think that concerta however is the better chioce the ritalion has so many up and down cycles we have treid it all
