Just a reminder to everyone to always wear a helmet. This morning while out on a short 10 mile ride, less than a mile from my house on neighborhood streets, I was clipped by a truck and crashed. While I was not going very fast, I came down very hard, hitting my head and suffering a mild concussion. The impact was such that the lenses from my sunglasses popped out of the frame! Had it not been for the Giro Pneumo Helmet that I was wearing, I'm certain that I would not be typing this now. So even if you are on a short ride just around the neighborhood, a helmet is still a good idea. I'll be writing a letter to Giro thanking them for making a quality piece of protection gear.
They did not stop. Honestly I'm only making a guess that I was hit because I really don't know. I have a fleeting memory that a vehicle was approaching me from behind (because of the noise) prior to when I went down. The truck (white with yellow hazard flashers and an unknown logo) was going away from me when I got up and looked down the road. Given the timing, that's the only assumption I can make. I have no damage to myself or my bike to tell how I went down, only that I did. A little love-tap to the rear tire perhaps?
This is the EXACT reason I have my rear view mirror, eventhough I don't like how it looks on my bike. I have had some CLOSE CALLS, I don't trust drivers, and I need to see what's approaching behind me.
