slightly Aspergers

We were told my our 12 year old son had ADHD and then told he had autistic tendencies. Then we were told he was slightly As when he was 14 and later that he wasn't. Then we were told yes he was but not to tell him, only to have it mentioned to him on our next visit to the same psychologist!Needless to say we asked for a second opinion and the psychologist has refered my son to a psychiatrist in the same hospital we are to see him in 3 weeks time.
Advice he has been given so far is to socialise more, join a football team( he hates football)or youth group, and also that it was time to grow up and stop depending on me so much, take responsability for his temper out bursts and learn to control them. This from the guy who says he has ADHD and As. Any advice on visiting the psychiatrist for the first time would be welcome

Re: slightly Aspergers

Hi Sally Ann

I am sorry that I can not give you advice on your first visit to the psychologist, but what you have been saying sounds very familiar to my son's case. There was however no confusion about if he was or was not Asperger's. He was and after that it was all much easier. I just let it go, treated him like any normal 14 year old, but was aware of his "slight differences". He is making good progress now (he is 16)and even started to socialise on his own account. So head up it might get better. Contact me on the above address if you feel like talking. I think that is the worse of it if you can not talk to someone who has similar problems. Other friends with ordinary children do not always understand. Take care and good luck. XXX Char XXX
