Hi Elaine....I also have hemochromatosis....I'm 65 and your mother sounds like me...So many medical problems...Your mother needs to have phlebotomies ASAP...The reason being is that iron goes into storage in the organs and then damages them....Heart, liver, ect...Any place blood goes iron goes....The rule is if your serum iron is over 50, you need to be bled...I have heart, liver, and numerous other problems, and at the first of this year I was dx'd with lung cancer...
The same is true of you, as you can inherit it...To find out if you carry the gene you have to have a DNA, as do your children....There is a gene test thru DNA to see if any of you have the gene that causes hemochromatosis....1 in 200 are gene carriers and it runs more in European decendants (sp?)....May I suggest you do a search of hemochromatosis on the internet where you will find a lot of info....God Bless....Pam |
