I was hoping I could get some assistance and advice from this board as I consider taking in a chi. For some reason or another one of my girlfriends coworkers has a friend who is looking to find a home for a chihuahua puppy. I'm really not clear on why they can't keep the dogs themself, but apparently something in their living situation changed so that they can't keep the dogs themselves. I would really like to help them out, and as a dog lover I'd hate to see this little guy end up in an animal shelter because they couldn't find a good home for it.
My question is mostly whether or not my living situation is a "good home" for this type of dog. Obviously, I'd only be helping this dog's situation if I can provide a good home for it. It's a decent-sized 2 beedroom apartment in the suburbs with a park right across the street. Having never spent any time around this type of dog, I was hoping you all could inform me on what sort of space they require and the amount of exercise he would need. I am gone at work all day but home every single night and most weekends. I have a roommate who has a slightly less restrictive work schedule, but even in the best case scenerio the dog would have 5 or so hours where he was alone. Also, being a puppy I'm sure he still needs to be housebroken.
Is it significantly more difficult to housetrain this type of dog than it is other breeds? I have experience with raising puppies, just not of this particular breed. Also, are there any specific diet or health restrictions I would need to keep an eye on? I was told by the current owner that he is currently up to date on all of his shots and everything. Thanks for your help. |
