Your Chi's toenails MUST be clipped at some point. I can understand your frustration because Gypsy will not let us clip hers either, and we have had her since she was only 8 weeks old. So, your Chi was not necessarily abused before you got it...it is pretty common for some dogs to be really sensitive about their toenails. Gypsy used to tolerate us clipping them, but as she got older she became more and more upset everytime we got out the clippers. My advice to you is to try another vet till you find one that knows what they are doing. I take Gypsy in about every 8 weeks and my vet has no trouble whatsoever with clipping her nails and they never have to muzzle or restrain her. But they NEVER do it in front of me. They always take Gypsy to another room to clip her nails or give her shots so she does not even see ME. I think this has a lot to do with it. But I would try another vet because your Chi has already had a bad experience with the one you used and believe me, they NEVER FORGET ANYTHING! I know there has to be a vet in your area who is kind and patient like mine and will be able to clip your baby's nails. Ask around with other small dog owners which vets they use and also ask the vets you call if they are experienced with Chihuahuas. My breeder recommended mine. At least three of the assistants who work there have Chihuahuas of their own and my vet really undestands this breed. Gypsy will let them do anything to her without a bit of a struggle! In fact, they always tell me she is a little angel!
GOOD LUCK! |
